Recovering From a Lost Key Backup

Recovery With a Valid Session

If you end up in a situation where you lose your Key Backup password, it is possible to recover the situation without losing access to your encrypted chat history as long as you have one verified login session. The procedure is simple:

1. Navigate to Settings > Security & Privacy and scroll down to Key Backup
2. Select 'Reset'
3. Follow the prompt

Recovery Without a Valid Session

If you lose all your sessions and login on a new, unverified session and don't remember your key backup password, unfortunately, your options are limited. You can attempt to recover old messages by following the procedure above and then asking someone from every encrypted room you are in to export their security key and then importing it under Settings > Security & Privacy.
